"But I would try. And I would...very much appreciate it when they did. It's- nice. Being supported."
Zerxus struggles with it too, which is why Kahl mostly doesn't tell him about how he plans to help him. But he tries, and it suits them well enough.
"It is," Kahl agrees softly, looking down at the dim, murky water, even as the mist starts clear a little, a hint of greater light from up ahead. "It is...a hell beyond description, to truly have no one."

He reached out, slow and gentle, to touch Kahl on top of his head, if it was allowed.
"Thank you for joining me here, in this river. It would have been terribly lonely to go on by myself."

Once he passes the misty line into the light, he'll drift into gentle, dreamless sleep.

it was a relief to have nothing but a quiet, restful sleep.
